UNFAIR WORLD

by Chieka Gwynetta

Unfair world, yes, that was the only way to describe the world. As the apocalypse had finally come. The sky had turned red. Blood had decorated the walls of the city buildings. Creatures prying their way out from rifts in the sky.

Footsteps are heard from distance. A girl was running, tears in her eyes, and a lanky tall creature was trailing her from behind. Suddenly, the creature’s footsteps were stopped in its tracks. She turned her head to look.

A man had sliced the creature’s head off.  “Are you okay?” said the man. Petrified, the girl stood still, frozen unable to do anything.

The man spoke again, “Well, we can’t just stand here. I found somewhere safe for us to go. The names Vergahn by the way…”

The girl finally opens her mouth to say something, “I-I’m Kiall.”

A few years have passed. Kiall had grown fond of Vergahn. Kiall’s job was to manage rescources and Vergahn saved many more people. A large group had formed.

“Kiall! Could you pass me some water?” said Vergahn.
“Sure!” answered Kiall as she walked towards him. Vergahn thanked her. She could feel her heartbeat rising at his every word, her ears becoming flushed.

“It’s late! You two should head back to camp!” shouted Nadya. Nadya is someone who was also saved by Vergahn, along with her husband, Enan.

“Of course, we’ll be right with you!” shouted Vergahn as he grabbed Kiall’s hand and walked towards them. Kiall feels as if her heart dropped right then and there. She started blushing profusely by this sudden gesture from Vergahn.

“Took you long enough.” Nadya said with slight annoyance.
“Kiall, are you okay? Your face is red.” Enan asked “We should get you checked out as soon as we get back.”

“O-oh I’m fine, just a little hot here. Let’s go back to camp.” She said in reply as she rushed
everyone to head back.

Camp wasn’t very far away, they got back relatively quickly thanks to Kiall. Camp was where Vergahn and his group lived, and where they worked to keep eachother alive. It is a very safe place as Vergahn’s group has worked hard to expand it, now almost alike to a village.

Kiall spent most her time there managing resources and tasks for everyone. Well, mainly for Vergahn’s sake. She often works late into the night and sometimes even going out to gather resources with Vergahn, even if it’s not part of her job. All for Vergahn’s sake.

One particular night, when Kiall was organizing inventory in the warehouse. It was becoming very late. But as she was finishing up for the day, she spotted a peculiar rug in the corner of the room that wasn’t supposed to be there. It looked filthy. So she wanted to take the rug to wash.

She rolled the rug up and was surprised. A trapdoor was unveiled. She thought it was a basement part of the warehouse that no one had ever discovered and decided to take a look inside. Climbed down she did, and what she found was very unexpected. A room filled with people’s belongings and their names.

As she looked around, she found a door leading to another room. She went in and what she saw made her skin crawl, she stood there silent and disgusted. She found a secret laboratory for human experiments. Unconscious people in tubes, murky jars holding mutant monstrosities, a pungent smell all throughout the room.

She walked around exploring the facility, with every step she became more and more disgusted. Finding the failed experiments, mutilated creatures and people. She becomes afraid of who did this and tried to find out who it was.

As she was walking, a hand reached out from behind, cloth on her mouth filled with sedatives.
“You aren’t supposed to be here” was the last thing she heard before she seeped into unconsciousness.

The next day, Enan and Nadya proceded to work as usual. Though, as the day went on, they noticed Kiall wasn’t on the job. So, they decided to ask Vergahn, the person closest to her if he knew anything.

“Hey, Vergahn! Have you seen Kiall anywhere?” asked Enan.
“No, she just disappeared last night.” answered Vergahn “I’m quite worried for her, you know”        “We feel the same, tell us if you see her, alright?”

“Of course”

Days have past, though still no sign of Kiall. Enan and Nadya felt as though something strange had happened. So, they decided to investigate her disappearance. Starting from where she was last seen.

They followed her trace and ended up in the warehouse, they too found the underground basement. Just like Kiall, the couple explored the laboratory. They find experiment records, about cloning, immortality, and just whatever inhumane things the scientist would do to satiate their twisted curiosity. With the new appearance of an “ingredient”, which are the monsters, they would try anything to understand this otherwordly thing. Even willing to give up their own humanity.

As Enan and Nadya read through these records, and wanted to throw up, they stumble upon a record from a few days ago. Which stated the appearance of an intruder.

“Oh, it would be such a terrible waste for this valuable human ingredient if I just killed her, so I sedated her and kept her in room X, waiting for her turn to shine in those magnificent tubes. Though I plan on getting rid of her once she has no use left, no witnesses allowed.” End of record.

Enan and Nadya knew that this was about Kiall, and soon began to panic. What if she’s already gotten rid of? So, they picked up the pace and scrambled for “room X”.

“I found it! On this door! It says ‘Room X’!” shouted Nadya.

“Really?! Let’s go!” answered Enan excitedly as he walked towards it.

They opened the door, what they saw devastated them. They found many dead bodies and Kiall’s in front of them, dagger in her chest.

“K-Kiall? Wake up Kiall!” cried Nadya as she holds Kiall’s cold body in her arms, trembling, tears in her eyes. Nadya keeps shaking Kiall, as if she thought that there was still hope that she’s still alive.

“Let go Nad, it’s over for her…” says Enan as he tried to hold back his tears, clenching his fist so hard his hand bleeds. Nadya finally lets go, sobbing.

“Finished mourning yet?” says a voice from behind.

“It was you wasn’t it…” muttered Nadya

“Hmm?”

“IT WAS YOU WHO KILLED KIALL!!” shouted Nadya as she lunges towards the voice with a dagger.

“NADYA WAIT!” warned Enan as he tried to stop Nadya. But it was too late, the person dodged and killed Nadya in one swift move.

Panicked, Enan ran away, but just before he did he saw a glimpse of who it was. It was Vergahn. The person he last suspected to kill his bestfriend, his wife, and to toy with humans as if they were his playthings. He now lost two people who were precious to him because of Vergahn. Betrayed, all he thought now was the betrayal he felt, from someone he thought was a capable leader, someone he looked up to, someone he trusted.

Enan ran away as fast as he could, he had to live to tell everyone. To tell them about the laboratory, the atrocities he commited, and the casualities. At last, he’s got back to the heart of the camp. He told everyone about what happened. Though, everyone only looked at him with disgusted looks.

“Has he gone insane?”

“There’s no way Vergahn would do that…”

“Yeah right, he saved us from the monsters, why would he kill the people he saved?”

Despair was the only way to describe what Enan was feeling at that moment. Was this why Vergahn let him run away? Because he knew no one would believe him? Questions akin to these kept rolling inside his head. He felt as if he was going insane. No, perhaps he already has.

Few days have past, Enan has met Vergahn a few times since that incident. And every time he met Vergahn, he would just smile sadistically when no one was looking. Enan had enough of this.

At night, he went to Vergahn’s home. There, he was lying asleep peacefully. Enan thought of how outrageus, how unfair the situation was. While he had constant nightmares and terror the past few days, barely sleeping a wink. Vergahn slept without any guilt.

Consumed with rage, Enan stabs Vergahn many times. Vergahn wriths in pain and screams as his warm blood splatters unto Enan. After a few moments, Vergahn’s body slowly becomes motionless. Unlike the relief he imagined that he would feel after killing him, he instead felt more dread than anything.

Has he become a monster, too?

As he stands there still, motionless. The people outside who had heard Vergahn’s screams are coming over. Many were shocked and furious to see Enan covered in blood next to Vergahn’s body. Some people kicked and spat at him, unable to contain their anger towards the one whom has killed their saviour. Guards came to take away Enan for his crimes of killing Vergahn.

The next day, the people Vergahn had saved, rioted and shouted, saying Enan should have a public execution. The people who managed the camp decided to hold the execution that afternoon. It was because they had no choice but to comply with the people and because they also hated him, too.

Later that day, everyone had gathered to witness Enan’s execution. It was decided he would be executed by shooting. Enan, tied up and kneeling, felt that he had done the right thing, even if he had to die hated by the world.

As he was bracing himself, he looked up to the crowd, and saw him. Vergahn, alive and well, smiling twistedly at Enan as he was going to die. The sound of the crowd fades out, as he barely makes out what Enan says to him by reading his lips.

“Did you think after experimenting ruthlessly on cloning, it would yield no results? Did you think killing me would solve everyone’s problems? Don’t be so naïve Enan. Because we live in a ruthless and unfair world…”
