Sunday is a solid guy, he’s smart and cunning. And he just has that sort of politician smile. He’s from the game Honkai: Star Rail (HSR), which is also from the same developer as Genshin, MiHoyo.
Sunday is the former head of the Oak Family. He was the organizer of the Charmony Festival and a representative of The Family of Penacony. Sunday comes off as a dignified, benevolent, and rational individual. He is revered, seemingly determined and just. However, he is also prideful and cunning, willing to manipulate and lie in order to reach his goal of granting Robin’s wish of a world where everyone can attain peace. He believes that a society of “survival of the fittest” is not capable of reaching true happiness, and thus wished to use the Order to create a dream where people were free from the harshness of reality at the cost of never waking up. His intentions are not fueled by malice, as he genuinely wishes to protect people from suffering, simply his perspective on humanity and human nature is pessimistic. He believes that people have an innate desire to escape from their pain, and acknowledges that the reality he wishes for is only an escape. However, he does not view escaping reality as something to be ashamed of, despite the fact that people would not be able to grow from their struggles in a painless dream.
Sunday reminded me of Ayato, and I thought drawing his little wings would be fun 🙂 (it is fun). But the first time I drew him, his pose was a bit boring, there wasn’t any perspective and his face proportions weren’t exactly great. I still drew him holding a pawn though. but the only difference is that we were looking at him from the side. I didn’t like how it was turning out, so I ditched it. I took some time off drawing Sunday.
After a while, I still wanted to draw Sunday at least once. So I opened up a doll posing app and posed a male doll crossing his legs, his face facing down, while holding a chess piece. I screenshotted it, imported it into Procreate and traced it. I gave the base, hair, wings, and clothes. For the halo, I drew it once the first time, I wasn’t gonna torture myself again. So I downloaded a Sunday Halo stamp brush, imported it and filled the colors in. Work smarter, not harder, hehe.
For the hair, I first rendered it a bit soft and added some purple accents, then I felt it was a bit weird. I rendered a new set of hair, it had harder strokes and was purely blue. It felt weirder. I decided to go with the first set but I tidied it up a bit. Well, most of it was covered by the lighting anyway.
For the clothing, all MiHoyo characters have such complex outfit design, which are actually torturous to draw. AND THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAD TO DRAW IT, AND IT’S NOT LIKE THERE’S A STAMP FOR THE OUTFIT, TOO. I HAD TO REDRAW HIS CLOTHING AND ALL OF THOSE REALLY ANNOYING TIDBITS FOR THE SECOND TIMEEEEEEEEEE.
I’m okay 🙂👍
I sketched the chess board and decided that it would the light source. Uhhh, who wants glowing chessboard?? I don’t really know anymore, I just needed a light source coming from the middle. For the lighting, I first drew a messy concept of how I wanted the lighting to be, then I just added a bunch of layers of shadow and lighting. I added really hard light in this piece, especially near the ends of his hair. Finally, I added some effects behind his head. I think he turned out pretty ok. I feel quite satisfied with this one.
